The Sierra National Forest can be found on the western slope of the central Sierra Nevada some 50 miles east of Fresno, California. There is something to please everyone, many fall in love with the wide range of scenic hiking trails and wilderness areas, the many lakes and streams are an anglers and boat owner's dream, and keen sports people are catered to with the variety of white water rapids and scenic water ways.
The Sierra National Foest is nestled between Yosemite National Park to the north, Inyo National Forest to the north east and Kings Canyon National Park to the south east. It has 11 reservoirs, 528,000 acres of designated wilderness, over 60 campgrounds, two wild and scenic rivers and 1,100 miles of trails. All of this makes the Sierra National Forest an ideal destination for an RV rental holiday.
Lovers of the great outdoors often return again and again for the wide range of outdoor recreational activities available throughout this stunning natural wonderland. It covers a vast expanse of over 1.3 million acres. It extends from the Merced River south to the Kings River and east to the crest of the Sierra Nevada. Within its boundary can be found a wide variety of forest terrain from the gently rolling oak covered foothills along the San Joaquin Valley to the rugged majestic snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada Crest.
The majority of attractions in the forest are easily accessible to visitors in one of our RV rentals. The three major access routes are State Highway 41, State Highway 140 accessing the northern half of the Forest, and State Highway 168 accessing the southern half.
Boating
Water based recreation is very popular, the Sierra National Forest provides numerous opportunities for canoeing, water skiing, sailing, fishing, windsurfing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and house boating. Camper hire travelers who wish to remain dry can still enjoy a self catered picnic on the banks and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Forest.
Camping
Camping is one of the most popular activities with visitors to the forest. There are several campgrounds located in a variety of settings and elevations. Many campgrounds allow you the opportunity to pick your own spot in their dispersed camping area.
Many forest campgrounds will not accommodate oversized motorhomes or RV rentals. Our camper rental customers should note that there are no hook ups at forest campgrounds however there are a range of privately operated campgrounds which do.
As usual when camping in a forest area consideration must be given to the presence of bears and other forest creatures. Always lock your food and other items away before you leave your campsite. Our lockable campervans provide the ideal way to ensure all of your provisions are secure.
Fishing and Hunting
The Sierra National Forest has an excellent range of stream and lake fishing however fishing regulations do apply and visitors should be aware of these before casting off. Fishing in lakes and reservoirs is permitted all year round however fresh water stream fishing is only open from late April to mid November.
Any angler over 16 years of age must obtain a California fishing license from one of the local stores (the National Forest offices do not sell fishing licenses). You may also need to purchase a regulation book which will provide you with information about the rules and regulations such as what type of hook and bait to use, fishing restrictions and limits on the size of your catch among other things.
The forest waterways are teeming with aquatic life and will provide an abundance of fresh fish for your enjoyment. Our camper rental customers enjoy the convenience of having access to the fully equipped kitchen facilities onboard most of our rental vehicles.
